Pink Boots Society, Iron Hill debut beer to help women in the industry

These Pink Boots were made for drinking, and that’s just what we’ll do.

This week, the Pink Boots Society and Iron Hill Brewery are teaming up for a beer release as a belated celebration of Women’s History Month. Pink Boots, a local nonprofit, is dedicated to advancing the careers of women in the brewing industry, and with the release of their new beer, the Suffragette City Berliner Weisse, locals will have a chance to be in on the movement as well.

The new brew is described as a Berliner Weisse with copious amounts of marionberry puree and a sprinkle of sage. Its tasting notes include blackberry, earthy sweetness, and lemony tartness, with a “touch of Ziggy Stardust magic.” Iron Hill has also kettle-soured this wheat beer overnight with natural live cultures from Greek yogurt in between boils to give this spring-time savvy sip both a refreshing finish and a colorful hue.

Crafted by the talented female brewers at Iron Hill, including Brittany Jackson (Columbia, SC); Emily Siddal (Hershey, PA); and Avery Hookey (Exton, PA), Suffragette City will be released on draft at all Iron Hill locations on Thursday, April 11, a release notes.  It’s also one of the many new releases from brewers around the world participating in the annual Pink Boots Collaboration Brew Day in celebration of International Women’s Day, and a portion of each pint sold will be donated to the Pink Boots Society.

The Pink Boots Society was founded in 2007 with the intended mission of furthering the careers of women and nonbinary people in the fermented beverage and alcohol industry, through education, the release also notes. Although female brewers have been around for centuries (the earliest noted record of this dates back to the Mesopotamian Era), both Iron Hill and Pink Boots have made it their mission to keep women in the business strong.

“It’s truly empowering to unite with other women in an industry where our presence may not always be as prominent. Collaborating on Suffragette City with Pink Boots Society not only allows us to raise funds in support of women in brewing but also reinforces our shared commitment to diversity and creativity,” said Jackson in a statement. “Together, we’re not just brewing beer — we’re brewing change and paving the way for future generations of women in brewing.”

A potion of proceeds from the sales of the brew will directly support the Pink Boots Society’s mission of supporting women in their brewing careers. The release also notes that Iron Hill has a long history of supporting women in brewing, hiring its first woman brewer in 2005, and has continued to hire talented women in brewing to support its reputation of producing the most award-winning craft beers in the region.
