Police identify woman killed in Spring Garden Street hit-and-run

Police have released the identity of a woman who was killed in a hit-and-run in West Philadelphia early this morning.

The crash happened at 33rd and Spring Garden streets shortly after midnight. Police said that a 2003 Nissan was driving east, exiting the ramp of I-76, when its driver broadsided a 2004 Nissan that was traveling west on Spring Garden, causing it to roll over a curb and flip onto its side.

Following the accident, the driver of the striking car, a 30-year-old man who has not yet been identified, allegedly got out of his vehicle and fled the scene on foot. He was later stopped at 35th Street and Lancaster Avenue and arrested, police said.

The driver of the car that was struck, a 56-year-old man who lives on the 700 block of North 37th Street in Mantua, is being treated for minor injuries at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. But his wife, Sandra Lee, 52, who was a passenger in the car, died at Hahnemann Hospital shortly after the crash.

Charges have not yet been filed against the suspect. Police said they are still conducting an active investigation.
