Police shoot man after chasing stolen car

Police shot a man early yesterday morning after a brief car chase in Juniata Park.

Officers tried to stop a BMW with a stolen tag around 12:30 a.m. and ended up chasing it to a parking lot at G Street and Ramona Avenue.

The male Asian driver and female Hispanic passenger were ordered from the vehicle, but the driver refused to remove his hands from his waist area, despite repeated warnings from officers, Lt. Ray Evers said.

After some back-and-forth, the man made a sudden movement. “An officer believed that the Asian male had a gun and fired two times, striking the male once,” Evers said.

The man was taken to Temple University Hospital in critical but stable condition. The female passenger was not arrested.

The BMW had been reported stolen three hours earlier at Front and Emily streets in Pennsport.
