Philadelphia police arrested a suspect in the hit and run of a police sergeant on Thursday evening.The officer sustained serious injuries after he was struck by asuspected drunk driver early Thursday morning on Manayunk’s Main Street. Around 12:30 a.m., the 26-year veteran of PPD, who was conducting a traffic stop on Main Street nearShurs Lane, was thrown about 15 feet into the air by a man driving a Toyota RAV4, according to multiple reports.
The driver suspected in the crash fled the scene, police toldNBC10. Atow-truck driver near the scene of the crashchased the driver for about a mile through Manayunk and Roxboroughuntil police stopped the vehicle on the 400 block of ConarroeStreet,Fox29reported.
Police said the driver, later identified as 21-year-old Colin Murphy, appeared to be under the influence of alcohol and was taken to Police Headquarters for a Breathalyzer test.
The sergeant, 55, was left bleeding from his legs and arms, and sustained a broken collarbone, and head and neck injuries,NBC10reported. He is listed in stable condition at Einstein Medical Center.His cruiser had on its emergency lights at the time of the crash.
Murphy, from the 600 block of Appaloosa Street, Schwenksville, Pennsylvania, has been charged with Aggravated Assault While DUI, Criminal Mischief, DUI and related offenses, PPD reported.
