Real Madrid and Everton: Two storied sides set to face Union

What a week for soccer fans in the Delaware Valley. What a week for the Union players.

Not only will the Union host Everton tonight at PPL Park, but they’ll face powerhouse Real Madrid on Saturday (9 p.m.) at Lincoln Financial Field.

Both matches, known as friendlies, will be a good test and the young players will benefit from the experience. While the games don’t count in the standings, they will surely help build character.

After all, these are two clubs with so much soccer history.

“It’s good competition, like last year,” said Union manager Peter Nowak. “I think we’re all looking forward to it.”

Everton is a five-time FA Cup champion and winners of nine top-flight league titles in England. Founded in 1902. Real Madrid C.F. has won a record nine UEFA Champions Leagues and 31 La Liga titles, 18 Spanish Copa del Rey Cups, eight Spanish Super Cups, two UEFA Cups, one UEFA Supercup and three Intercontinental Cups.

Even the veteran players, such as defender Danny Califf, are stoked about these two matches.

“I think it’s great for the fans to come watch a high quality side and it’s a good game for us as veterans and the young players to step on the pitch against quality opponents,” Califf said. “It’s always a good time. There’s not any pressure for a result. You just step on the field and compete against a great side.”
