Simmonds, Bryzgalov get NHL star treatment

Wayne Simmonds is starting to gain legend status in these parts.

After a weekend that saw him score a goal with his face, the Flyers wing came back the very next day and lit the lamp, and started a fight. Simmonds was playing with a visor to protect his face after receiving six stitches above his right eye and nose. Yesterday, he was named the First Star of the Week by the NHL.

“It’s a great honor,” said Simmonds, who has scored goals in four straight games. “Obviously I think that’s the most painful goal that I’ll ever score in my NHL career. I don’t hope to do that again, but it was worth it.”

“He’s obviously a tough guy and he finds a way to get it in the net, even with his face,” Claude Giroux said.

Simmonds has tallied a career-high 27 goals this season. His previous high had been 16 goals in 78 games with the L.A. Kings back in 2009-10.

Teammate Ilya Bryzgalov was also honored by the league, garnering First Star of the Month accolades. The Flyers goaltender has recorded four shutouts, the most in the NHL in March, while posting a 10-2-1 record with a 1.43 goals-against average. He became the first Flyer to allow two or fewer goals in 11 straight since Bernie Parent.

Injury report

Danny Briere is out indefinitely with a back injury, per GM Paul Holmgren. Briere sustained the injury Sunday when Joe Vitale checked him late in the third period.

Defenseman Nicklas Grossman is out for 7-10 days due to a knee injury. Vitale also provided the fatal blow there after a knee collision.
