South Philly brunch (and more) spot Fourth and Cross abruptly closes

Fourth and Cross is no more.

The contemporary take on the classic diner, lauded far and wide as a progressive emblem of Philadelphia’s commercialand culinary progress, closed abruptly Monday. Owner Andrew Michaels posteda notice on the restaurant’s website and social media channels that the last meal service would be Monday, Dec. 21.

Michaels thanked his customers and staff for the brief venture, saying he was “proud” of the work done. “However, due to a slew of small reasons (some obvious, some not), I will not longer be able to keep our doors open,” Michaels lamented. “Any and all failures are mine,” he insisted.

The news hit Pennsport hard as Fourth and Cross received numerous positive reviews and was quicklyfeatured as a go-to spot in multiple local publications. The restaurant opened June 15.

When Fourth and Cross opened, Eater Philly reported that the restaurant was searching for staff and promised”above-average” wages, health insuranceand paid time off.

Michaels said in a statement that he’s “already reached out to other restaurant owners to assist in any way” that he can help secure employment for his staff. “Money is tight,” Michaels admitted, “so we will do our best.”

He went on to say that if any businesses were “looking for hardworking, passionate and responsible folk who love the restaurant business,” they should contact Michaels at andrew@fourthandcross.com.
