A young girl was killed and an adult was seriously injured in a fire that was caused by an electric bicycle battery early Sunday morning in Kensington, authorities said.

The blaze broke out just after 3:30 a.m. inside a rowhome on the 3300 block of D Street, according to the Philadelphia Fire Department. First responders who arrived at the scene saw smoke coming from the second floor, officials said.

Firefighters rescued a girl and an adult from the home, but the child later died, a fire department spokesperson said. The adult was hospitalized in critical condition, according to the department. Officials did not release further information about the victims.

Two other people, an adult and a child, escaped from the home and were treated for nonlife-threatening injuries, authorities added.

The Fire Marshal’s Office determined that the fire was caused by a lithium-ion e-bike battery that was in an upstairs bedroom, the spokesperson told Metro.
