The Philadelphia Eagles (2-5) take the short trek down I-95 to take on the Washington Commanders (1-4-1) in what looks to be a lackluster primetime Sunday night game to close out the main slate of Week 8.
The Eagles are playing on short rest after falling to the Dallas Cowboys on Monday night, making it a fifth-straight loss, something the team has not endured in a decade. They look to avoid losing a sixth consecutive for the first time since 2012.
Washington has had extra time to prepare for the Eagles during its bye week and have some momentum after almost pulling off the upset against the San Francisco 49ers thanks to a strong second half put together by Jayden Daniels that made it a close game, losing 23-17.
Philadelphia held on to a 24-22 season-opening win at Lincoln Financial Field, having to stop Washington on a two-point conversion to seal the victory.
Two months later, both teams look much different. The Eagles will be without DeVonta Smith and Dontayvion Wicks on offense. The Commanders are also down their top wideout for the year in Terry McLaurin and defensive tackle Daron Payne.
So who do our PSN writers have winning this game? Check out the predictions below:
After picking the Eagles to beat the Cowboys last week because I thought the defense would hold Dak Prescott and the offense in check, the poor performance from Vic Fangio’s unit was quite concerning. Therefore, it is tough to pick the Eagles to win a game until I actually see them win another game.
I do believe the offense will look just as good if not slightly better with Tanner McKee having another week of practice and reps along with Sean Mannion understanding what worked well in the loss to Dallas and what caters to McKee’s strengths.
Although I expect a bounceback from the defense, I still think the short turnaround will play a factor for a unit that has played a ton of snaps so far this season. The Eagles enter the game surrendering 371.3 yards of total offense, the sixth-most in the NFL.
This Commanders team outside of a bad first half, almost knocked off San Francisco two weeks ago. Now, coming off a bye having extra time to prepare for Philadelphia, it gives them the advantage in this one.
I expect a competitive divisional matchup that comes down to late-game execution. Eagles fans watched the Cowboys execute perfectly late in the game and take an overwhelming lead, while Philadelphia struggled and put up only seven points in the second half. The Birds need to play four quarters of competitive football.
Neither team is going to suddenly become an offensive juggernaut, but whoever plays complementary football, limits turnovers, and capitalizes on the other team’s mistakes will leave the field with a much-needed victory.
Philadelphia was embarrassed after its loss to Dallas, and maybe that is what the team needed to regain its fight. It is hard for me to imagine the team folding and giving up, despite their record and struggles. They are facing a one-win team, and after enduring a five-game losing streak, they need a win in the biggest way. I think they get it Sunday Night.
As much as I like the 'bounceback' approach of this game against a divisional rival, the Eagles have had ample opportunities to do so all season and just as one problem is fixed, another is created. The Eagles rank 31st in the NFL in points per game over the last 3 weeks and while the Comamnders defense isn't exactly elite, what doesn't help is the Eagles' own defense now beginning to crack. If the team can't score points it's one thing, but if Fangio's defense begins to fracture, the Commanders have enough talent to frustrate a team that's already against the ropes and essentially watch as the dominoes fall.
I'd love to see an Eagles win, but until the offense can actually switch up a gameplan on a fly and the defense can show that the fundamentals of tackling and understanding assignments were a fluke occurance, I simply can't see them finding a way to win.
