SugarHouse Casino will announce this afternoon its title sponsorship of Philadelphia’s New Year’s Day Mummers Parade for three more years, through 2016, according to a release.

SugarHouse first stepped in to bankroll the parade two years ago after the city in 2008 cut expenditures in the face of a budgetary crisis.

The casino also hosts an annual Mummers Appreciation Weekend every February and hosts the Mummers Against Cancer event each April to benefit the American Cancer Society.

“SugarHouse loves the Mummers – several of our own team members have been part of the parade since they were young, and the rest of us grew up watching along Broad Street,”SugarHouse general manager Wendy Hamilton said in a statement.

“We’re so excited to be strutting with the clubs for three more New Year’s holidays. What a great Philly tradition!”

The Mummers Parade, whose roots in Philadelphia date back to the 1600s, was the first parade officially sanctioned by the city.

More than 10,000 participants each year create complex custom costumes and serenade residents in a citywide pageant.

Hamilton will officially announce SugarHouse’s continued sponsorship of the Mummers Parade at 3 p.m. Tuesday at The Refinery restaurant at SugarHouse Casino.

The Mummers will present Hamilton with a pair of “golden slippers” to show their gratitude.
