UPDATE: No! You can’t sleep in a tent during the papal visit

Apparently, $199 to sleep in Fairmount Park was too steep a price.

Just two days after it was unveiled, officials killed aplan to turn a portion of the park into a campground called Francis Fields during the weekend of Pope Francis’ visit, saying there wasn’t enough interest—and plenty of hotel rooms available.

“After reviewing the plan and due to limited sales for Francis Fields, ESM Productions have elected to cancel the campground accommodations at Francis Fields,” said Joshua Plant, of ESM Productions.”Philadelphia has plenty of accommodations to offer all those who are making the trip to The World Meeting of Families for the papal events.”

In addition to the $199 camping fee, organizers behind Francis Fields wanted to charge $99 for parking, $5 for showers and $999 for RVs. Campfires weren’t allowed.

News that camping wasn’t allowed came as Mayor Michael Nutter spent much of Friday trying to drum up business for Philadelphia’s downtown hotels, which — much to everyone’s surprise — are not sold out for the pope’s visit.
