Villanova in hunt for title

Villanova’s football team can establish a school record with its 13th victory. While that would be nice, the Wildcats are aiming for No. 14. That would mean a Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) national championship.

“We know it would be the coolest thing to play for a national championship, but we can’t allow ourselves to look ahead,” said junior wideout Matt Szczur. “We have to take it one game at a time. We can’t afford to look ahead.

Understandable.

The Wildcats improved to 12-1 with a 46-7 win over New Hampshire last Saturday to advance to the national semifinals. On Friday, they host William & Mary at Villanova Stadium. It will be the second appearance in the semifinal round for Villanova and its first since 2002.

’Nova could meet either Appalachian State or Montana for the title Dec. 18 in Chattanooga, Tenn.

“We’re focused on William & Mary,” Szczur said. “This is the biggest game of the year for us.”
