On the evening of Christmas, a woman delivered a baby boy on the Market-Frankford Line.
The delivery happened while the train was heading eastbound toward the 15th Street station.
SEPTA police chief Thomas J. Nestel III tweeted around 6:21 p.m. on Christmas after the baby was born successfully, “ Transit Police SGT and PO deliver baby on Market Frankford El train!!!! WOOHOO!!! Now that’s a Christmas gift!!!”
A SEPTA police officer and a Philadelphia Police Department officer both responded to the scene and assisted the woman as she gave birth while stunned passengers watched.
Trains were delayed for about 30 minutes with all passengers boarding on the westbound platform at the station as a result of the birth.
The baby and its mother were transported to Hahnemann Hospital in good condition, NBC reported.
