MoAR

If you need something to do for the kiddos, there’s a pretty hefty incentive to head to the MoAR over Labor Day weekend.

The Museum of the American Revolution will be offering free admission for kids 12 and under from Saturday, Aug. 31 to Monday, Sept. 2., with a few different highlighted events happening on top of the venue’s standalone exhibits. All you have to do is purchase entry at the front desk during that time period.

While there, families will be able to explore their special exhibit ‘Witness to Revolution: The Unlikely Travels of Washington’s Tent’ and hear 10-minute in-gallery talks covering artisans— including upholsterer Plunkett Fleeson—who made George Washington’s headquarters tent and camp equipment.

And as a release notes, visitors can also experience the Museum’s first-person theatrical performance portraying Continental Army soldier Joseph Plumb Martin, one of the thousands of teenaged soldiers in General George Washington’s army, who wanted to prove he was “as warm a patriot as the best of them.” This performance is appropriate for all audiences and will be performed at 1:15 p.m. and 3:15 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 2.

There will also be a few crafting opportunities over Labor Day weekend for kiddos. In the Museum’s family-friendly discovery center, Revolution Place, families can explore the Old City neighborhood during the 1700s through hands-on exploration in four key recreated historical environments. There will also be ways to make a pop-up tent craft inspired by George Washington’s sleeping marquee.

And additionally, as the release also notes, visitors can design a cap craft to take home like those worn by the Black and Native American troops of the Rhode Island Regiment who marched through Philadelphia on their way to Yorktown on Sept. 2, 1781.

Lastly, there will also be a Discovery Cart onsite from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., plus a Museum educator will be in attendance to tell stories about what life was like at sea during the Revolutionary War for the Continental Navy, privateers, and prisoners of war.
