Overnight Broad Street hit-and-run injures two bicycling teens

Police have now located a man allegedly connected to an early Friday hit-and-run on North Broad Street that left two teens injured, one critically.

Shortly before 2 a.m., police say a car struck two 16-year-old boys who were riding on the same bicycle near the corner of North Broad and Wallace streets, 6ABC reported. The vehicle, which witnesses said was speeding, fled the scene.

Both victims were taken to Hahnemann University Hospital, and one was treated for a broken leg and the other remained in critical condition with head injuries, according to Philly.com. The impact from the vehicle was so strong, it sent one of the bike’s tires flying 50 feet down the street.

“Within minutes, 6th District officers found the car in the 1300 block of Ridge Avenue. Witnesses were transported to the car and they positively identified the vehicle,” Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small was quoted by CBS3.

The car had significant front-end damage, according to 6ABC, which added that the driver was taken by police for evaluation along with a 25-year-old passenger who was interviewed as a witness.

“The driver, who is 34 years of age, was with the vehicle,” Chief Inspector Small said to 6ABC. “He appeared to be intoxicated.”
