Democrat Josh Shapiro cruised to reelection Tuesday night, beating out State Treasurer Stacy Garrity in the Pennsylvania governor’s race.
The Associated Press called the race in Shapiro’s favor minutes after polls closed at 8 p.m. The incumbent had raked in 78% of the vote tally, as of 9 p.m., according to preliminary results posted by the Pennsylvania Department of State.
Shapiro, the former state attorney general, was elected to his first term four years ago. He is considered to be a potential Democratic presidential nominee in the 2028 race for the White House.
“In his first term, Governor Shapiro has created thousands of good-paying jobs, showed that government can work better by fixing I-95 with lightning speed, and made historic investments in education and law enforcement — all with one of the only divided legislatures in the country,” said Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, chair of the Democratic Governors Association, in a statement.
“He knows how to bring people together to deliver real results, and in his second term, he’ll continue working hard for Pennsylvanians by standing up for their freedoms, keeping communities safe, and making life better for families across the Commonwealth.”
