Gluten-free doesn’t mean you can’t have an authentic Italian feast.
In fact, Le Virtù is planning to throw two dining experiences where being gluten-free isn’t an afterthought — it’s the whole menu. The popular South Philadelphia destination will host dual evenings with a special, celiac-safe dinner on Thursday, Nov. 5, and Thursday, Nov. 19, from 5 to 9 p.m.
There are no tickets or prix-fixe menus. Instead, guests can order à la carte, pay as they go, and settle in for a full-flavored affair.
"We know so many people in our lives and over the years that are now GF and that have celiac — including people in and out of the industry," says Le Virtu's Executive Chef Andrew Wood. "This includes many former servers, sous chefs, vendors and partners. The number one thing we hear from our friends is that being GF and having celiac can be all about what you can't do. You can't go here. You can't eat this. You can't drink this."
"We want to create a special night where we turn the 'you can't' into 'now you can.' We want our patrons and friends to have a safe space where we can all share in our love of food again — and not worry about getting sick, asking too many questions and not knowing our protocols."
The preparation is as serious as the promise. As the restaurant notes, after service wraps on Wednesday, Nov. 4, Le Virtù’s kitchen, bar and prep areas will undergo a thorough deep cleaning before the team begins preparing for that Thursday’s dinner. The same process will take place ahead of the Nov. 19 event.
The menu itself “reads like a love letter to central and southern Italian flavors”, with inventive gluten-free interpretations of Le Virtù’s lineup. Some pasta highlights include buckwheat tortiglioni with octopus ragù; spaghetti with tomato-braised goat ragù, rosemary and pecorino; and green pea fusilli with porcini sugo, seared local mushrooms, spinach and aged balsamic.
The rest of the menu is just as tempting. Locals can start with house-cured salumi and giardiniera, a colorful assortment of vegetarian antipasti, Abruzzese cheeses with girasole honey, or grilled provolone with toasted almonds. The evenings will also feature pampanella-style roasted pork belly, grilled Abruzzese sausage with saffron-lentil ragù, and a radicchio and frisée salad.
For the main event, diners can dig into dishes like red-wine-braised Peposo beef shoulder, brick-grilled chicken, bacon-wrapped stuffed pork loin, seared red snapper, Grilled Pumpkin alla Parmigiana and toasted gnocchi with fresh tomato sauce, basil and mozzarella di bufala.
For dessert, there will also be treats like chocolate olive oil cake, Lu Parrozz’ (a flourless almond cake with orange, saffron and dark chocolate ganache), ricotta cheesecake, gelati and sorbetti.
Le Virtù’s multiple indoor dining rooms, bar, and outdoor seating area in the restaurant’s patio and garden will be open (with the latter's availability contingent on the weather).
"We already have many GF options on the menu and get requests from our loyal customers all the time for more. This is a way for [us] to really offer something special and serve our community in an expanded way," Wood adds.
"For Le Virtù's first GF night we wanted to go big, offer top quality dishes and unique things you can't find on any other GF menu within hours of Philly [while keeping] our Abruzzo flavors and traditions.”
The gluten-free, celiac-safe dinners at Le Virtù (1927 Passyunk Ave.) will take place Thursday, Nov. 5, and Thursday, Nov. 19, from 5 to 9 p.m. Reservations are available now through Resy. For additional info, visit levirtu.com
