East Passyunk will transform into a Halloween hub Saturday, Oct. 31, with a full day of autumn festivities and Halloween fun centered around the Singing Fountain.
The celebration will also spill out to Mifflin Triangle, The Gateway and Broad Street as well, inviting visitors to explore the Avenue’s local shops, discover handmade finds and indulge in plenty of seasonal treats.
Founded in 2012 by local artist Elissa Kara — owner of Nice Things Handmade — this year's festival will feature more than 110 artists, makers, vintage vendors, small businesses and community groups, offering everything from handmade jewelry and ceramics to candles, prints, textiles and unique finds.
For those looking to trick or treat, East Passyunk’s Creepy Crawl kicks off at 11 a.m., and families can “follow the spiders lurking in participating business windows” to nab some candy. Kiddos can also head to The Gateway at Broad and Tasker for pumpkin carving from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. (pumpkins and tools provided while supplies last) or head to a Halloween-inspired yarn pop-up and make-and-take craft station.
The annual dog costume contest will also be in full swing this Saturday. Entries open at 11 a.m., ahead of the noon showdown at the Singing Fountain. Hosted by Monster Minders, the competition will crown winners in categories like Best Overall, Best Foodie Costume, Best Pop Culture Icon and Best Dog/Human Duo. Complimentary pup-cups will also be available to registered contestants, and visitors can meet adoptable dogs from Street Tails Animal Rescue while there as well.
The schedule also holds an outdoor screening of Hocus Pocus at 12:30 p.m. at Tasker and 11th Street, live painting near the Singing Fountain, a high-energy drum performance by Batala, live music and themed photo opportunities from South Philly Time Capsule and Mendel Productions.
Up and down the Avenue, neighborhood businesses will additionally add their own specialty treats to their menu like fall-inspired eats, hot cider, retail specials, Halloween flash tattoos and creative make-and-take activities.
Admission and trick-or-treating are free, with food, drinks, shopping and select activities available for purchase. The festival takes place rain or shine, so costumes, comfortable shoes and a healthy appetite for Halloween fun are encouraged.
