Suit: Philadelphia Cops Beat Man into Coma

A Northeast man has filed a civil suit against the Philadelphia Police Department, claiming that officers beat his son into a coma during a February incident.

The complaint, filed in Common Pleas Court yesterday, says officers began yelling at and running toward Kahlif Snowden, 25, near Indiana Avenue and Gransback Street on Feb. 18 for unknown reasons. Officers caught up with Snowden and proceeded to kick, punch, slap and use a Taser on him even after he lay motionless the ground. The complaint claims Snowden offered no resistance.

As a result of the beating, Snowden suffered massive brain damage and has been ruled incapacited. He now resides in a Wyncote nursing home.

The complaint is seeking an excess of $50,000 plus legal fees. The plaintiff in the suit is John Snowden, Kahlif’s father, and the defendants are Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey and 12 unnamed officers.

It is unclear whether Internal Affairs is investigating the incident.
