The Colour of Culture: A Celebration of the African Diaspora

The free two-day art exhibit takes place this weekend and strives to showcase local Black visual artists, live music and more. Presented by ‘Fun Times Magazine’ in collaboration with Elebration, Sol Fed and ZBE Productions, this event is meant to celebrate the energy and creative diversity in Philly’s communities of color.

While there, Philadelphians can check out visual arts, paintings and sculptures by local artists; custom vintage T-shirts by Rashied Amon of the Black Culture Museum; try a tasting of Black-owned coffee brands by ZBE Coffee; join a roundtable discussion on Black Arts & Liberation; check out a cypher lounge and live music performances brought to you by Milena of Sol Fed Open Mic (including singers and spoken-word artists) and much more. 

‘The Colour of Culture’ will take place Saturday, May 21 from 1 to 7 p.m., and Sunday, May 22 from 1 to 6 p.m. Guests can RSVP to this free event through EventBrite.

Neshaminy Beer Launch at The Mahoning Drive-In Theater 

Neshaminy Creek Brewing Company has teamed up with The Mahoning Drive-In Theater for a special beer release that has been a long time coming. The new brew, Showtime at Sundown, is described as a throwback beer that has a malty body, a hint of sweetness, and a dry finish, making it a light and easy drink at 4.2% ABV. As a release states, Showtime at Sundown will only be available exclusively at The Mahoning Drive-In Theater and all three Neshaminy Creek Brewing Company taproom locations in Croydon, New Hope, and Dublin on tap for $5.50, 6-packs for $12.50, and cases for $41.50, starting May 21. 

To celebrate the release, NCBC will be at the Drive-In on night two (May 21 from 4 to 11:30 p.m.) of their “It’s a MAD MAD MAD MAX Weekend.” While ‘Max Beyond Thunderdome’ and ‘Fury Road’ play on the CinemaScope screen, Neshaminy will be selling merchandise and beer-to-go so viewers can bring a taste of the drive-in home with them. These Don’t Easily Scatter

The world premiere of ‘These Don’t Easily Scatter’ by three-time Obie award-winning writer and director Ain Gordon is officially this weekend. The new show opening comes as part of ‘Remembrance’— a memorial experience with civic and theatrical performances and oral histories, all designed in partnership with artists, activists, and community leaders to honor those lost to AIDS, a release states.

‘These Don’t Easily Scatter’ was inspired by the two-year efforts of ‘Remembrance’, and Gordon himself conducted 20 interviews chronicling stories of Philadelphia-area community members who have passed unnoticed, with or without the love and support of families throughout the HIV/AIDS crisis.

The work highlights three fictional/imagined figures as they navigate through the initial points of the crisis in Philadelphia: “A nurse starting her career one year before the city’s first officially diagnosed case; an inexperienced man tiptoeing toward his sexuality while everything changes; and a middle-aged chorister joining a church that must reimagine itself for a community in need.”

Philadelphians can catch ‘These Don’t Easily Scatter’ on May 20 at 7:30 p.m. for the opening; May 21 at 3 and 7:30 p.m.; and on May 22 at 3 p.m. All screenings will take place at the William Way LGBT Community Center, and tickets are available through Eventbrite.

Sustain Your Neighborhood Art and Food Festival

NextFab’s inaugural event kicks off this Saturday, May 21 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Sustain Your Neighborhood Art and Food Festival allows Philadelphians to support local, small businesses, and connect with sustainability-focused resources. In total, the event will feature will feature live music, over 40 local vendors, an activity tent for all ages, and food from Sor Ynez and other local vendors. 

As a release states, in line with NextFab’s fundamental mission to drive artisan entrepreneurs into building their businesses, this festival will showcase the work of the region’s most talented creators. NextFab hopes this event will also pave the way for consumers to shift into a sustainably focused mindset. The Festival will take place at NextFab’s location on American Street and will be open to all ages.
