Chase Utley’s bag was unpacked and his locker filled prior to yesterday’s Phillies game. Now, the team is hoping the five-time All-Star can fill a gaping hole in their hit-starved offense.
Utley will rejoin the Phillies today after a 16-day rehab stint at Class-A Clearwater (Fla.). He is expected to be in the lineup tonight when the Phils host Cincinnati at Citizens Bank Park.
Utley, who batted .281 in nine rehab games, didn’t address the media, but he isn’t expected to play every day. Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr. had previously stated that he will be extra cautious to avoid further injury.
Utley hasn’t played this season because of patellar tendinitis in his right knee.
