Amtrak to allow dogs and cats on Northeast trains

Trains, they’re not just for hobo dogs anymore.

Amtrak says small dogs and cats come along for the ride on its trains from Boston to Virginia.

The rail carrier made the announcement following what it says was a successful pilot program in Illinois.

Spots for furry friends, however, are limited. Animals must weigh less than 20 pounds, and there’s a limit of five per train. Reservations must be made 30 days in advance, and the animal must be kept in a carrier under the owner’s seat.

There’s also a fee. It costs $25 to bring your pet aboard.

Amtrak began letting pets ride the rails in Illinois in 2014. More the 200 animals rode with their owners that year. The rail service said the program did not recievea single complaint.
